Three PETA Stars for Mensa Academica

41 of the 58 German Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke took part in this year’s survey that was conducted by the animal rights organization PETA Deutschland. With the survey PETA again searched for the most vegan-friendly dining hall. Studierendenwerk Aachen gained three stars for Mensa Academica.
Students like it animal- and eco-friendly: Vegan food has become an integral part of young people’s diet. Therefore, PETA elects the most vegan-friendly dining hall once a year and surveys German Studierendenwerke. We can be proud of this year’s results: Mensa Academica was awarded three of five possible stars. Some of the criteria that are assessed in the survey are selection, regularity and labelling of plant-based dishes, trained staff, the offer of plant-based drinks and special vegan days.
According to the points system only those dining halls that offer nothing but vegetarian and vegan dishes can be awarded five stars. The three-star rating, which PETA says is "equivalent to a good rating," is thus the highest for facilities that also serve meat. This year, there was a four-star rating for two of the student unions: for Mensa Blattwerk of Studierendenwerk Hamburg and Mensa Bambus of Studierendenwerk Mainz.
In Mensa Academica a vegan dish is part of the every day menu. There is also a big vegetable and salad offer that changes daily. For the annual World Vegan Day the halls serve a vegan three-course meal; the cooks, kitchen staff and trainees get regular trainings about vegan cooking. Sustainability in the dining halls, cafeterias and coffee bars is constantly tested and improved.
