Daka (Darlehenskasse der Studierendenwerke e.V.) is a non-profit organization run by the 12 Studierendenwerke in North Rhine-Westphalia. For more than 60 years the loan society has given interest-free loans to students who experience financial hardship. It is the biggest loan society in Germany that is run by Studierendenwerke. In the recent student loan test of CHE (Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung – Center for University Development) it got excellent results.
Via their local Studierendenwerk students can apply for a maximum loan amount of 12 000 €; the monthly payment can be up to 1 000 €. The loan amount and the duration are based on the individual requirements. Repayment normally starts twelve months after imbursement of the whole loan amount. A later start is also possible.
The Daka loan is interest-free; only an administration fee (5 percent of the loan amount) is levied.
Just between January and July 2018 Daka granted loans amounting to 2,75 million euros in total to 450 students; the average loan amount is 6 100 €.
