Package of measures from the "Bündnis bezahlbarer Wohnraum"

- "Bündnis bezahlbarer Wohnraum" (Alliance for Affordable Housing) adopts comprehensive package of measures for a construction, investment and innovation offensive
- Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), as a partner in the alliance, has campaigned massively for the creation of more affordable dormitory places at the student and student union organizations
- Establishment of a federal-state program for student housing, for young housing and housing for trainees within the framework of social housing subsidies
- Start of the program "Young Housing" planned for 01.01.2023
The German Student Union (DSW) is a partner in the "Bündnis bezahlbarer Wohnraum" of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). At today's "Bündnis bezahlbarer Wohnraum", a comprehensive package of measures was adopted for a construction, investment and innovation offensive to create 400,000 affordable apartments per year, of which 100,000 are to be publicly funded.
The DSW has long been a massive advocate for the creation of affordable, sustainable housing for students. This is urgently needed. As early as mid-September 2022, a random sample showed more than 35,000 students waiting for a place in a hall of residence at eleven student unions.
Matthias Anbuhl, Secretary General of the German Student Union, comments: "The lack of affordable housing is a huge problem for students. The BAföG flat-rate housing allowance of 360 euros per month is not enough to finance a roof over one's head in the vast majority of university towns.
It is therefore good that the federal-state program "Junges Wohnen" has now been agreed as a concrete measure in "Bündnis bezahlbarer Wohnraum". This can be used to create new affordable housing at the student unions and to renovate the existing stock. The program can provide relief in the medium term - if the financial volume and funding conditions are right. It is important that it can now start safely on January 1, 2023, as planned by Federal Minister of Construction Klara Geywitz."
