Philipp Humbsch is „Student of the Year“

Medical student at the Berlin University Hospital Charité gets awarded by Deutscher Hochschulverband (DHV) and Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW)

Bonn/Berlin, 16 February 2018. The DHV (German Association of University Professors and Lecturers) and DSW (German National Association for Student Affairs) honoured Philipp Humbsch with the „Student of the Year“ award. The 26 year old medical student founded the initiative „Everybody can be a hero“. Since 2016, the project has offered free first-aid training to 3 000 pupils at basic schools and to more than 100 children at special-needs schools in rural areas in Brandenburg.

“Everybody can be a hero” organizes three-day courses that teach about topics such as recovery position, reanimation, putting on bandages and self-protection. As voluntary aid organizations and voluntary fire brigades take part in the project, pupils also get to know what it is like to do work for charitable purposes.

It is Humbsch’s goal to incorporate first-aid training into school curricula. Up to now, children from the seventh grade up only get short instructions on first aid. Humbsch wants to change that and therefore has his initiative evaluated by the Institute for Social Medicine of the Charité – real pioneering work.

„Philipp Humbsch has convinced the DHV-DSW jury with his varied, exemplary and outstanding voluntary work. He does not only make heroes, he is a hero himself. Despite his time-consuming studies he sacrificed uncountable hours for the first-aid training for pupils. ‘Everybody can be a hero’ sensitizes to doing volunteer work in structurally weak regions; at times when organizations lack members who want to show commitment”, explain DHV and DSW.

The “Student of the Year“ award is presented for the third time. It is given to students who show outstanding commitment and accomplishments that are unique and innovative. Philipp Humbsch is going to receive the award at the “Gala der Deutschen Wirtschaft” on 3 April 2018 in Berlin. He wants to invest the prize money of 5 000 € in his project.
