- Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) on the financing of student and student services in the pandemic year 2020
- Grants or financial aid from the federal states account for 10.9% of total revenue in 2020
- Revenues decrease by 9 percentage points to 52.7% of total revenues of the pre-pandemic value due to the long closure of the university catering services
Berlin, 25.11.2021. The 57 student and student unions in Germany have so far come through the pandemic economically sound. This was reported by Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), which unites the 57 student unions.
It is true that the income of the student and student unions fell, mainly due to the long pandemic-related closure of refectories, cafeterias and bistros. However, through internal measures, support from the ongoing financial allocations of the federal states, the use of the short-time allowance and recourse to their own funds, they have been able to master the economically difficult situation overall so far.
According to the new DSW publication "Studentenwerke im Zahlenspiegel 2020/2021", grants and financial aid from the federal states account for 10.9% of the 1.618 billion euros in total revenue in 2020. 52.7% of their revenue is generated by the student unions themselves, from rental income and other revenue. Students' semester contributions accounted for 22.5% of funding. For comparison: In the previous year 2019/2020, the student and student services organisations had funding of 1.844 billion euros at their disposal.
