Studying with children – Studierendenwerke support student parents

Berlin, 28 March 2019. Childcare centers, short-term care, free food in the dining hall, parent-child-groups, family-friendly housing, financial support, counseling: The services provided by Studierendenwerke and Studentenwerke make Germany’s universities family-friendly. A new brochure issued by SFS (Servicestelle Familienfreundliches Studium) of Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) presents details. Six percent of the students are parents.

The report „Studieren mit Kind gelingt … mit den Studenten- und Studierendenwerken“ (“studying with a child … will be successful with Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke) tells about flexible childcare provided by Studentenwerk Tübingen. Parents can drop off their children on campus between 8 am and 8 pm. A portrait presents the family counselor Beate Bastian of Studierendenwerk Koblenz who gives information about financial support and childcare. And a photo gallery gives a general overview of the range of services Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke provide for student parents.

The 21st Social Survey conducted by DSW shows: Six percent of students in Germany already have one or more children. The Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke support them with 9 000 flexible childcare places near campus Germany-wide and, depending on the location, with family apartments in residence halls, free food and play corners in the dining halls, financial support and counseling.

SFS is the main contact point for questions about family-friendly infrastructure for student parents. It gives advice and connects Studentenwerke, universities, the government and initiatives for family-friendly support with each other.
